Siena Goes 0-3

November 30, 2008

If you look through this blog you will see a post I made a few weeks ago telling people in the Capital Region to watch a few Siena basketball games before they crown them.   I said lets see how they do in their preseason tourney before we talk about at large bids and tournament wins again.

Siena played its final game of the Old Spice Classic this morning at 10:30 against Oklahoma State.  The Saints ended up losing the game and coming in dead last in the tournament.  The Saints finished the tourney with an 0-3 record.

It isn’t just the record that made the tournament a disappointment.  It was the way they lost that was really hard to swallow.  The Saints got absolutely embarassed by Tennesseee in the opening game.  They blew a big lead to a weak Wichita State team.  They watched a smaller Oklahoma State team beat them on the glass today.

The consequence of such a bad showing is Siena’s chances of getting an at large bid are all but gone.  The Saints will now have to focus on winning the MAAC title and putting this experience past them.

The good news for the Saints is they have a few days off to enjoy the Magic Kingdom and Baltimore before they have a date with oyola of Maryland.  The matchup will be Siena’s first league game of the year.  Hopefully they will have better luck then they did in Florida.

Burress is a mess.

November 29, 2008

Plaxico Burress has had a rough season with the New York Giants this year.  He has had a number of off field incidents with the Giants over his career but the latest one is just not acceptable.

Today sources have said that the star wide reciever had told the Giants that he had accidentally shot himself.  The good thing is the injury is not life threatening.  Burress shot himself in the leg while he was at a nightclub friday night.

I wonder what the phone call was like when Burress told the Giants he accidentally shot himself. Photo courtesy of Google Images.

It is good news for the Giants that the reciever is ok but at the same time you can’t be happy at all.  First of all what is he doing out at a nightclub 2 nights before the game.  The second thing and most important what is he doing with a loaded gun at a club?  If you are a member of the New York Giants organization you are not happy at all.

The thing that is extremely selfish on Burress part is he has been a distraction to the team all year.  This was after he just got a contract extension so you have to wonder if that has anything to do with why he is not on his best behavior.

If I am a member of the New York Giants front office I suspend him once he is able to play again.  Burress has already been suspended once this year and the Giants did fine without him.  It is time teams showed these athletes that nobody is bigger than the team.

Last Game for Fulmer

Tommorow the Tennessee Volunteers face the Kentucky Wildcats at Neyland Stadium.  For the crowd of over 100,000 it might seem like any other home game but Coach Phillip Fulmer won’t feel that way at all.

Saturday will be the last game for Coach Fulmer as the Tennessee Volunteers football coach.  The coach that led Tennessee to a national championship in 1998 was forced to step down a few weeks ago.  Fulmer was not meeting up to the standards that ironically he set at the University of Tennessee.

The Volunteers are just 4-7 this year and will miss a bowl game once again.  For an SEC power the Vols have been underachieving for a while now.  They have not made it to a BCS game since they won the title in 1998.

As bad as the Vounteers have been playing it is a shame to see Coach Fulmer leave.  He has been part of that university for over 30 years and 17 of those as head coach.  He will always be a part of Tennessee Football.

Fulmer had been on the hot seat in Knoxville for years.  He leaves as one of the winningest coachest in SEC history.  Fulmer will have a career record of 151-52.  Win or lose saturday Fulmer will be remembered in Knoxville as well as college football forever.

Thankgiving?

November 27, 2008

I know there are a number of holidays we celebrate here in America.  I actually enjoy holidays.  Just think, holidays are a reason to get a break from work or school.  I feel like sometimes we actually forget about what were celebrating though and get too caught up in the moment.

Look at the Thanksgiving holiday.  I think it is great that we have a holiday where we are supposed to be thankful for what we do have.  I love how watching the Lions or the Cowboys playing on Thanksgiving are a tradition.  I love how we actually have an excuse to eat as much food as we want and then still be able to go back for the leftovers the next day.  Thanksgiving really is awesome.

The thing how did we come up with this holiday in the first place.  I know that were supposed to believe we should all be thankful and nice to eachother like the Pilgrims were nice to the Native Americans.  I know were supposed to believe the Pilgrims invited the Native Americans over to have a nice meal and be friends forever.  The thing why are we supposed to think that?

If you ask me as much as I like Thanksgiving the entire holiday is rediculous.  What really happened years ago was the Pilgrims came over and basically gave the Indians a final meal.  They were nice to the Indians at the time but that didn’t last long.  The Pilgrims gave the Native Americans diseases that they brought over from their homeland.  The Native Americans that didn’t get sick were eventually pushed off the land.

Now that everyone knows the real story you can think about it when you are celebrating Thanksgiving from here on out.  Think about how nice the Pilgrims were to give them a last meal before they took their home from them.  I guess knowing people from another country aren’t coming over to steal our homes from us is a reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day Games

November 25, 2008

If you are looking to sit down and watch some good football this Thanksgiving you probably won’t be too excited.  The matchups on national television this year are terrible.

The 1pm game features the 0-11 Detroit Lions against the 10-1 Tennessee Titans.  Many people think the Lions will not win a game all year.  They might be the worst NFL team ever assembled.  The 4pm game is between the 7-4 Dallas Cowboys and the 2-9 Seattle Seahawks.  The spreads on both games are double digits so Las Vegas thinks the games won’t be close as well.

There actually is a good game on Thanksgiving night between the 5-5-1 Phialdelpha Eagles and the 7-4 Arizona Cardinals.  The problem is the game is televised on the NFL Network.  This means that all 13 people in the United States that get the game will be in the luck.  For the rest of you the game will not be available on your local channels.

The bottom line is this year is going to be a bad year if you want to watch a close game on Thanksgiving.  I like tradition but I am starting to get sick of watching the Lions on Thanksgiving.  They are terrible every year and watching them on a full stomach just makes me want to puke.

The Eagles Got What They Deserved

November 24, 2008

Yesterday the Philadelphia Eagles benched the franchise quaterback Donovan McNabb after a rough first half against the Baltimore Ravens.  McNabb had thrown two interceptions and fumbled all in the first half of the game.

The thing that is amazing about this whole thing is at half time the Eagles were only down 10-7.  Donovan has not looked like the Pro Bowl Quarterback that he has been in years past but to bench him is just a dumb move.

McNabb could only sit and watch as his team failed to score in the second half sunday. Photo courtesy of Google Images.

The Eagles were 5-4-1 going into the game and in tight playoff race it was a very important game.  The fact that Andy Reid thought bringing a young quarterback in off the bench to face one of the leagues best defenses was a good idea is mind boggling.

It became clear when Kevin Kolb came in that he was not going to turn the game around.  Kolb also threw two interceptions one was in the Baltimore endzone.  Donovan didn’t look good but to sit him for that was wrong.

McNabb has done alot for the city of brotherly love but has had taken criticism his whole career.  McNabb was booed by Eagle fans the day he was drafted.  The way this game was handled wasn’t much better.

The Eagles went on to get blown out in the game against the Ravens.  They are most likely out of the playoffs.  I am not saying if McNabb played the second half they would have won but they would of had a much better chance.

It’s Football

November 23, 2008

The National Football League is cracking down on defensive players hitting the quarterback.  They are trying there best to protect the quarterback.  Fines and personal fouls on defensive players hitting the quarterback have increased greatly this year.

I understand the quarterbacks are the faces of the NFL.  I understand in alot of situations the quarterback is defenseless.  I think the league needs to understand that this is football.  This is not soccer.

Troy Polamalu said the league is becoming a "pansy game" after seeing all the penalties this year. Photo courtesy of Google Images

The problem I have with the whole thing is football is a physical game.  The physical aspect of football is what gives it alot of appeal.  People like football over other sports because of the physicality.  If you take away that part of the game it just won’t be the same.

I understand that sometimes dirty hits occur but that is not what I am talking about here,  This year I have seen numerous hits where the defender does his best to not go helmet to helmet  and to not land on the quarterback and still get called for it as well as fined.

The defenders in this league should not have to be thinking about how to hit the quarterback while they are going to tackle him.  They should be worried about knocking the quarterback down.  It is absolutely rediculous to ask a defender to change the way he has played all his life because the league has a crush on every quarterback in the league.

My big problem with the NFL in this situation is if they want to take away that physical part of the game fine but don’t show big hits on highlights.  The NFL knows they make money off of people being interested in big hits so they continue to use it as a marketing tool.  If you want to advertise it then dont be trying to take it away.  If you want to take away violene then stop using violence as a marketing tool.

Danes first home game. Should I go?

November 22, 2008

Right now I am sitting here debating about wether or not to go to the UALBANY game tonight.  The Danes are hosting Central Connecticut State University.  It is the first home game of the year for UALBANY.

The problem is Texas Tech is playing Oklahoma in what appears to be the game of the weekend in college football.  I would like to see UALBANY play tonight because I know they have alot of new faces in the lineup.

I hate this period of the season when college basketball and college football intersect.  I am too big of a fan of both sports to make a decision like this.

A Glitch In The System

November 21, 2008

It is no secret that the majority of college football fans as well as coaches across the country consider the BCS to be flawed.  Year after year we have to worry about the almighty computer getting it right and putting the two correct teams in the national championship.

This year in college football we may be set up for more complaining than ever.  Right now the two teams holding the top two spots are ranked 1 and 2.  The problem is what if 1 and 2 lose?  How do you actually decide which one loss team deserves to make it to the national championship?

Another problem that I see nobody talking about is the fact that only two teams from a conference can make a BCS bowl game.  I think this rule is absolutely rediculous.  Right now Texas Tech is undefeated and is number 2 in the country.  If they lose this week at Oklahoma they probably won’t even make a BCS game.  Texas and Oklahoma would both make it over Texas Tech because even though they share the same record just because Texas Tech lost later.

At the same time a team that will get into a BCS game is a much weaker team like a Cincinatti or a Maryland just because they won their weaker conference.  Imagine the look on the Texas Tech players faces if they end up having to watch a team like that play in the Orange Bowl while they are playing in thesystemisflawed.com bowl.

The fact remains college football is very exciting but at the same time it could be even more exciting.  Instead of having debates at the end of the year we could be watching playoff football.  Division Two schools do it.  Division 3 schools do it.  NCAA basketball does it.  When is NCAA football going to do it?  If it was up to Barack Obama the playoff would be implemented immediately.  Take a look at his interview with Chris Burman of ESPN below:

Guess whos back…back again

November 20, 2008

Adam Jones AKA “Pacman” Jones got reinstated by commisioner Roger Goodell yesterday after being suspended for getting in a fight with his bodyguard.

At this point in his career Adam Jones probably has more mugshots than football pictures. Photo courtesy of Google Images.

Adam Jones will be allowed to practice with the Dallas Cowboys starting today.  He won’t be allowed to play until December 7th when the team travels to Pittsburgh.  The fact that he is allowed to play at all this year is rediculous in my opinioin.

Many people say that because no criminal charges were filed after Jones recent altercation that he should be given a break.  My response to that is are you people serious? Pacman has been arrested numerous times since he has been in the league and I have no idea why hes even still in the league.

Adam Jones has been given more chances than a monopoly player throughout his entire career.  The man was suspended last year after being involved in a shooting at a Las Vegas night club which led to a man being paralyzed.  The man has had problems with the law throughout his career.

I really thought when he was reinstated at the beginning of this year it would be his final chance.  The fact that he got in a fight with the man that was assigned to keep him out of fights says it all.

When you have had as many chances as Jones I don’t care if there are criminal charges or not.  Your job is to play football and that is it.  He shouldn’t even be in the environment to get into trouble.

The bottom line is this man should not be reinstated.  The NFL is making a huge mistake.  Hopefully Adam can prove me wrong.
