Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox was announced as the American League’s Most Valuable Player yesterday. As a Boston Red Sox fan I was happy to see him win it because I felt he deserved it. At the same time it left me wondering why they wait so long to hand out these awards?
The fact that the World Series ended on October 27th and the regular season ended on September 28th just shows it is rediculous to wait this long to give out the awards. For the majority of sports fans the minute the MLB ends it is time to move on to the NFL or NCAA football.
The other reason I think giving out the award so late is a problem has to do what the award really is for. The MVP award is actually supposed to be for the regular season. What if Dustin Pedroia had a great regular season and then went into the playoffs and didn’t get a single hit? How would it look then?
The bottom line is if you are going to give out an award for the regular season give it out as soon as the regular season ends. You don’t see them giving out the World Series MVP award next month. They give it out as soon as the series is over.
I think Dustin Pedroia is honored to recieve the award. I think he deserves to be recognized by the majority of MLB fans. I feel that waiting so long after the season to give out the awards makes the average fan not care.
